Kerala

Kerala is in the south-west region of India on the Malabar Coast.It is surrounded by Karnataka to the north and north east, Tamil Nadu to the east and south, and the Lakshadweep Sea to the west. Malayalam is the most widely spoken language. Kerala has a many Hindu temples.The main Hindu festivals are NenmaraVallangi Vela. There are five classical dance forms for which Kerala is very popular i.e. Kathakali, Mohiniyattam, Koodiyattom, Thullal and Krishnanattam.

Kerala is declared as the first state in India in the year 1991 to be completely acknowledged as literate state.

Weather

Winter starts from November till February. Winter temperatures recorded as 10*c.summer starts with high temperature, low rainfall and slightly humid weather. The temperature recorded is 40*c. At night it is cool and pleasant. Starting from March till May and beginning of June is the start of monsoon season.

  • Thekkady located at Periyar National Park is popular tourist attraction in Kerala. Murikkady consists of spices and coffee plantations. It is about 5 km from Thekkady. Chellar Kovil which is located about 15 km from Kumily en -route to the Theni district of Tamil Nadu. This place is famous for waterfalls. Anakkarawhich is located 13 km from Kumily on the Kumily-Munnar road is another famous place to explore. Last but not the least Mangala Devi Temple situated 15 km from Thekkady is surrounded by lavish greenery.
  • Padmanabhaswamy Temple, located in the centre of Thiruvananthapuram, is a storehouse for many sacred Hindu texts
  • Guruvayur Temple and Chottanikkara Temple are the other two main temples in Kerala.
  • Edakkal Caves, with two natural caves is located at Edakkal, which is 25 km from Kalpetta in the Wayanad district of Kerala. Inside the caves are symbolic writings from 6,000 BC, representing the existence of an ancient civilization.

Kerala people love to eat rice and curry with rasam, and sambar. Sadhya is another very popular vegetarian meal that is served on a banana leaf and followed with a cup of payasam. Popular snacks include banana chips; yam crisps, tapioca chips, and sea food including prawns.
